If you are a professional voice over talent residing in the USA, you should already have a paid Source Connect Standard or Pro account. Source Connect is a software that connects you to any other client or production house that uses the same software. When it is used, you sound like you are in the same room as the other person which offers a great opportunity for the producers and client to make sure your read/sound is exactly what you were hired to voice and it works perfectly with their branding plan.
The days of going to a local studio are over. Since Covid hit, at Impressive Talent, all voice over talent are required to be completely set up at home with their pro studios and have many options to accommodate clients and producers with their work including source connect, zoom, facetime, phone and other methods since many are working from a home atmosphere instead of driving to their local studio. Most studios accommodate these situations well.
But, at times source connect can get a bit wonky, on a talent’s end, on a studio’s end or somewhere in between. It happens, it’s not expected but you can work to find solutions to this situation.
- Option 1 is to have either party go to Source Connect Now and create a link and share it with the other party. That is a quick and easy way to get things rolling again.
- Option 2 is to do a zoom link. The downside to this is the talent will still need to edit the audio before sending it off so if the audio is needed asap, being able to record on the producer’s end would be a top preference.
- Option 3 is to do a phone patch. Many times talent receive directed sessions through the phone and can send in multiple options for the client to choose from.
The main thing to focus on is how to continue with your scheduled session and make the producers and client happy. There are other less popular software entities in the world, but if you crunched for time realizing you’ve got an issue, it’s better to stick with a software you and the producers are familiar with.
In the future, there’s always the option to “test” your source connect with another voice over talent well before your session to make sure everything is working fine. The unexpected does happen though, so if you’re in a bind, stay calm, focus and work with the producers/clients to find the best alternative. This happens now and then, technology isn’t perfect.
